Légende

Scene from the opera of "Robin Hood", at Her Majesty's Theatre, 1860. 'Many of our London readers who have been spectators of this most popular Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre (where its attraction continues undiminished) will at once recognise the accompanying sketch as a graphic and spirited picture of the first scene of the second act, in which Hugo, the Sampnour (or collector of abbey dues), travelling through the forest with a sackful of contributions wrung from the poor peasants of the neighbourhood, falls into the hands of the outlaw and his "merry men," who, after inviting him to share their woodland feast and then easing him of his treasure, compel him to dance for the amusement of the joyous band. [George] Honey's personation of the luckless official in this scene is most ludicrous, and is nightly received with shouts of laughter'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
