Madonna and Child, late 15th century. In this picture of Mary, who is breastfeeding her newborn son, the depiction of nature and the garden plays a large part in the Christian symbolism. The apple of baby Jesus refers to the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge, while the enclosed garden corresponds to the idea of Mary’s virginal purity as well as the lost Paradise. The Son of God has regained it by becoming a human being.
