Folding fan with scene from Vertumnus & Pomona, c.1750. In his 'Metamorphoses' (XIV: 623-771), Ovid tells of the countless forms that the God Vertumnus took before he could win the nymph Pomona. Only after he had made a plea for love in the form of an old woman and then taken the form of a young man, did Pomona become his. The front of the fan is a Bloemaert-like representation. On the front of the leaf, a particularly finely painted, ornamental border under which are two mermaids in the left corner and in the right corner a deer followed by a dog.
