Mortuary Chapel in Memory of Assheton Smith, Esq., at Tedworth, Wilts, 1858. 'In the beautiful grounds of Tedworth Park, Wiltshire, there is a mortuary chapel and mausoleum now in course of erection to the memory of the late lamented Assheton Smith, Esq....When the work is completely finished the remains of that "fine old English gentleman" will herein find their resting-place. The chapel is about twenty feet square. It is built in the Roman Ionic style with domed roof and cupola. The extreme height is about fifty feet. The inside of the chapel is octagon in plan. Sculptured figures representing the four Evangelists are placed at the angles...and their symbols are placed over them. The whole of the windows are filled with stained glass, and the floor is covered with elaborate mosaic pavement. The mausoleum is similarly paved and glazed, and is separated from the chapel by a handsome open-work bronze gate...The whole building is beautifully designed and executed, and well placed amidst the fine Tedworth trees. It is an appropriate tribute to a worthy man, and reflects the highest credit on the taste and skill of the architect (Mr. Kendall, junior). The work is being executed in the most praiseworthy manner by the artisans attached to the estate'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858.
