John Knox's Study in Edinburgh, 1858. 'The house of John Knox, which forms such a picturesque feature in the old town of Edinburgh, a few years since escaped demolition...Knox's house was in such a bad state of repair, and so dangerous, that it was determined to remove it...[but] a subscription was raised, and the house put into such a condition that it is likely now to remain for some centuries to come. The room, with exception of the windows, which were formerly of leaded glazing, has been little changed...Previous to its possession by Knox it was occupied by George Durie, Abbot of Dunfermline, who was forced to leave it at the Reformation. It was in the month of April, 1560, that the Reformer [Knox] took up his abode in this mansion; and he continued to make it his principal residence for twelve years...Here he lost his first wife, Margery Bowes, a woman of amiable disposition and most Christian deportment; and to this house, three years afterwards, he brought his second wife, Margaret Stewart, daughter of the "good" Lord Ochiltree, and whose affections he was said to have gained by the black art and the assistance of the devil'.
