We are indebted to the sketch-book of Mr. Marshall Claxton for the...series of characteristic Sketches of a few of the manners, habits, and customs of the natives of India...a very common sight in Upper India - the graceful form of a Native Woman on the way to the tank to fetch water, carrying the vessel sideways till it is filled. Then it is placed upright on the top of the head'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858.
