Goodwood Races - "The Lay of the Last Minstrel", 1858. Horse-racing trophy '...manufactured at the establishment of Messrs. Garrard, of the Haymarket...It is modelled by Mr. Spencer, and partakes of the style of the Renaissance, grafted upon the more classic form of ancient days. The chasing of this cup, which is very delicate, yet at the same time effective, illustrates in some sort nearly the whole poem of "The Lay of the Last Minstrel." The artist has entered into the spirit of the poet, and done justice to the great Wizard of the North. Here may be seen the Lady of Branksome and all her state. The goblin sprite, Gylbin, is introduced in an appropriate manner. The attack of the bloodhound upon the youthful heir of the baron, and the opportune arrival of the English bowmen to the rescue; William of Deloraine, Lord Cranstoun, the monk of Melrose Abbey, are all faithfully and felicitously depicted - the chasing tools of the artist having kept concurrent pace with the pen of the poet'.
