Légende

Paris Demolitions - the Rue de la Montagne Sainte Genevieve, 1858. 'We have much satisfaction in presenting to our readers the accompanying Sketch of this celebrated old street in Paris, as it appeared till within a very recent period. In fact, the demolition of that part of it which occupies the foreground of our Engraving is only just accomplished, and the houses on the left, as far as Tabac-Vins, no longer exist. The corresponding houses on the opposite side are also undergoing destruction at this moment for the purpose of opening one of the new arteries of circulation on the left bank of the Seine. This old street, built on a very rude ascent, is situated in one of the most populous quarters of Paris...The Rue de la Montagne Sainte Genevieve was thus called because it led to the Abbey of St. Genevieve, situated upon the mountain'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858.
