The late Mr. Frederick Lemaitre, 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Etienne Carjat, of a '...popular French actor, who had been compelled by ill-health to retire from the stage during the last year or two...[When he died] he was about seventy-six years of age, and was in the receipt of a small pension from the Government; but his friends were, at the time of his death, endeavouring to raise a fund, by a special theatrical representation...for the benefit of this veteran performer. His funeral...in the cemetery of Mont Parnasse [in Paris], was attended by a large number of people of his own profession, artists, and literary men.
