Marquis of Abergavenny, 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Claudet. 'The Right Hon. William Nevill, now Marquis of Abergavenny, Earl of Lewes, and Baron Abergavenny...has been a Captain in the 2nd Life Guards, and was a Captain in the West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. Though the earldom is comparatively modern, having been attained in 1784, the barony, the original title, was of the date 1450. In the large part of West Kent in the midst of which Tunbridge Wells stands, and where the family estates are situated, the house of Abergavenny exercises a considerable influence, both social and political, and has not been chary in its efforts to support the cause of Conservatism, which circumstance will satisfactorily account for the step in the Peerage given to the present noble Lord by the head of that party'.
