View of '...the ceremony in front of the portico of the Capitol...engraved from a photograph by Whitchurch...Mr. Buchanan rose, and in a clear and strong voice, delivered the inaugural address. The President's remarks were frequently interrupted by loud applause; and on its conclusion cheer after cheer greeted the speaker. The oath of office was administered by the venerable Chief Justice; after which the members of the Senate, preceded by the Vice-President, Secretary, and Sergeant-at-Arms, returned to the Senate Chamber; and the President, accompanied by the Committee of Arrangement, proceeded to the President's house...During the afternoon thousands of citizens and strangers crowded to the executive mansion to pay their respects...'.
