Funeral of the late Duke of Rutland: Tenantry going to the Lying-in-State, at Belvoir Castle, 1857. Farm workers paying their respects to John Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland. '...notwithstanding the severity of the weather, 1037 persons attended the first day, and 2674 on the second; making a total of nearly 4000 visitors...Cards had been issued from the Castle inviting every tenant of his Grace to be present at the funeral, even if his rent amounted only to a shilling! The number of visitors was, consequently, very large, lining the way from the Castle to the Mausoleum, as far as the spot called the "Horseshoe," where the fine avenue of yew-trees commences...The coffin was placed in sight of the multitude, on a mourning-car covered with black cloth'.
