Fort and Town of Alessandria, Sardinia, 1857. 'The plan which is now to be carried out consists of a bastioned body and four detached forts, one situated on the Bormida, a second on the Tanaro, and the other two to the east and south-east of the place. This fortress, with the aid of Casale on one side and Genoa on the other, will enable a body of from 20,000 to 25,000 men to keep a much larger army in check for many months, until the arrival of succour from other quarters'. The town of Alessandria in in Piedmont, Italy, was formerly part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. From "Illustrated London News", 1857.
