Wreck of the Chilian Steamer "Cazador", 1856. Disaster off the coast of Chile. 'The vessel left Talcahuano with a smooth sea and south wind...having embarked the sixth company of the 2nd of the Line under Captain V. Rodriguez...twenty-three men under Second Lieutenant Alvarez de Araya, and a number of soldiers' wives, not less than 140...the First Lieutenant, Mr. Hubert Simpson, was startled by a sudden shock received by the vessel running on the Carranza Rocks...The Captain immediately gave orders to draw near the shore and land the passengers, but in vain. The hull had been opened in the bows...The boats were then lowered, and everyone who could hastened to the poop and embarked in the boats, and steered for the nearest shore, which did not offer a safe landing, so that the greater portion perished in attempting it'.
