Légende

Gaston de Foix - painted by Giorgione - bequeathed to the National Gallery by Mr. Samuel Rogers, 1856. '...picture on panel, measuring fifteen inches by eleven inches, attributed by the best judges to Giorgione, and called "Gaston de Foix ". It is a portrait of a young knight in armour - the head bare, the face seen in front, and full of melancholy sentiment. "Very noble in the figure and expression," says Mrs. Jameson, "and painted with great force and richness; it is apparently a study of armour, and has been attributed to Raphael."...If this figure represent Gaston de Foix, it must be in the character of St. George or St. Maurice, or some other warlike Saint'. Engraving of 'A Man in Armour' by an imitator of Giorgione, inspired by a soldier saint at the left of the altarpiece of the Madonna and Saints by Giorgione in the Cathedral at Castelfranco. From "Illustrated London News", 1856.
