H.M. New Dispatch Gun-Boat "Wanderer", 1856. Crimean War: Royal Navy ship. 'This fine gun-boat, of a new class, has just been fitted out at the Chatham Dockyard. She is one of the new dispatch gun-boats, built at Blackwall, and sister ship to the Mohawk. She is a very rakish-looking craft; in fact, from external appearances, she might be taken for a gentleman's yacht. The illusion, however, is soon dispelled on deck, for she carries two heavy Lancaster guns, independently of smaller pieces. There is no doubt, from her great horse-power (200) and extreme length, she will steam very fast. She has a very characteristic figure head, being a sun-burnt traveller with a carpet-bag slung on a stick over his right shoulder. She is the first of her class fitted out. There will be six or eight vessels of the Wanderer's class attached to the Baltic squadron this year'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856.
