'The review by the Emperor of the different corps of the Imperial Guard and Army which lately returned from the Crimea...[took place in] the Place du Carrousel...its principal object the distribution of the commemorative medals granted by Queen Victoria to the French officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers, who took part in the glorious campaign in the Crimea...His Majesty [Emperor Napoleon III] was accompanied by his Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Napoleon, Marshals Vaillant and Magnan, Generals Canrobert and Niel, Admiral Lyons, General Martimprey, chief of the staff of Marshal Pelissier, General Espinasse, and a numerous and brilliant staff, among whom were a number of English and Sardinian superior officers'.
