Naval Engagement between the Swedes and the Russians, at Hango Head, 1714 - from a Russian print of the time, 1856. '...a naval engagement between the Russians and the Swedes, on the 27th July 1714...it is worthwhile to observe the curious construction of the gun-boats, which resemble the Roman and Carthaginian galleys...Major Chambre (5th Royal Lancashire Militia)...remarks upon the character of the gun-boats and upon the gun being so well forward in the bows, and observes that the vessels seem capitally adapted to the narrow and shallow bays of the Baltic and their entrances, and that some of our naval constructors might take a hint from them..This battle - fought during the struggles between Peter the Great and Charles the Twelfth - took place near a spot which will be to all time a memorial of Russian treachery and barbarity'.
