David and Ellen Bell, three-quarter length portrait, seated, between 1840 and 1850. Scottish-born scholar Professor David Charles Bell was an author and professor of elocution, and was elder brother to Alexander Melville Bell and uncle to Alexander Graham Bell. He and his wife Ellen Adine Highland had eleven children.
