A letter from Lord George Gordon in Newgate, to Wm. Wilberforce, Esq. Old Palace Yard, Member for Yorkshire, 1792-07-10. British politician George Gordon writes to abolitionist William Wilberforce from Newgate Prison. Gordon mentions the trials of Captain Kimber, Mr. Dowlin, Mr. Devereux, and refers to the Duke of Clarence. '...As your character stands high in the opinion of the public...I trust you will not be offended at my mentioning some interesting circumstances relative to these trials...'. He also talks about '...cruelties [that] have been committed with impunity on the unhappy Africans...'. Gordon was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in January 1788.
