Promissory note [printed] for hire of slave Cely and two children, 1865-01-02. 'Petersburg, Va...We promise to pay to W. Howlett [illegible] the sum of - to be paid in two equal instalments, as follows: - dollars on the 1st day of July, 186 , and - dollars on the 1st day of January, 186 , for the hire of - Negro Slave, named Cely & 2 children Rose & May for the year 186 , said Slaves to be comfortable clothed and humanely treated - during the year to be furnished with two pairs of shoes, and to be returned at Christmas next, well clad, and furnished with Blankets & [illegible]; and it is further understood that the said Slaves are not to be carried out of the State of Virginia. Witness our hands and seals the day and year above [illegible signatures]'.
