Freedom paper for Noah Powers, an African-American man, 1811-04-29. Certificate of freedom, with a description of Powers, his age, and the fact that he was born free in Boston. 'City & County of New-York, I Richard Cunnhingham one of the Aldermen...and a Judge of the Court of Common pleas, called the Mayor's Court, in and for the said city, Do Certify, That on this day Noah Powers residing in the said city a black man exhibited proof before me, reduced to writing, of the freedom of him the said Noah, and being satisfied with such proof, I am of opinion, and do adjudge that the said Noah is free according to the laws of this state, and I Do Further Certify, that the said Noah is a person about five feet three inches high, has dark eyes and dark Hair, that he is about the age of thirty-five years, that he was born at Boston in Massachusetts and that he was born free as nearly as the same can be ascertained...'.
