An Ideal Negro Home in Chatham County, 1940s. 'What constitutes an ideal home? There should first by two mates in charge of the home who have fallen in love with each other, courted, and united in holy wedlock, thus may it be possible to understand, sympathize, and tolerate the weaknesses of each other. I think of a family which, to my mind represents an ideal home. When I taught in one of the county schools, I made friends with a family that was particularly kind to me. Since that family was interested in me and I in them, I visited the home frequently. The father, a taxi-cab driver; the mother, the proprietress of a store; a son, and a daughter constituted the family...'.
