One Third of a Nation, Philadelphia, 1938. '150,000 Persons Have Thrilled to "One Third of a Nation" - A Living Newspaper about Housing - Adelphi Theatre'. Poster for a play written by Arthur Arent, dealing with the problem of housing in the United States and the growth of slums in New York City. The play was adapted as a feature film in 1939. The Federal Theatre Project, created by the U.S. Works Progress Administration in 1935, was designed to conserve and develop the skills of theater workers, re-employ them on public relief, and to bring theater to thousands in the United States who had never before seen live theatrical performances.
