Stow-on-the-Wold, Cotswold, Gloucestershire, 1928. A group of men labelling auction entrants at the Stow Horse Fair. A fair in Stow has been in existence for over 500 years when a charter was granted in 1476 for it to take place twice a year in May and October. Originally a place to sell sheep as the trade in wool declined, the fair became a horse fair attracting gypsies and travellers from all over the country.
