The Siege of Sebastopol - portion of redoubt, occupied and evacuated by the Russians, 1854. Crimean War. 'As our cavalry moved on, supported by our artillery, the enemy retired from the redoubts on our left, and held their ground in two of those on our extreme right. The 93rd remained in line before Katichioi, and the infantry from the divisions in front of Sebastopol, were observed coming down. Several companies from the 1st battalion of the Rifle Brigade moved up, and having taken possession of the centre redoubt, abandoned by the enemy, advanced beyond in skirmishing order. The Third Division, under Sir G. Cathcart, followed; and whilst a wing of the 20th occupied the ditch of the redoubt, the other wing lay down behind...and the rest of the division in the rear. The Guards, under the Duke of Cambridge, were placed so as to cover the road to Balaclava'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
