General Canrobert, Commander-in-Chief of the French Forces in the Crimea, 1854. Portrait of François Certain Canrobert. 'This distinguished officer, who has succeeded the late Marshal St. Arnaud in the chief command of the French forces in the Crimea, is descended from an excellent family...On the 14th of January, 1853, he was appointed General of Division. Three months afterwards he was called to the command of a Division of infantry at the Camp of Helfaut. He was next placed at the head of the First Division of the Army of the East, where he took an active part in the operation of the debarkation, and in contributing powerfully to the success at [The Battle of the] Alma, where he received a wound; and at the Battle of Inkerman, on November 5, while heading the impetuous charge of the Zouaves, he had a horse killed under him, and was slightly wounded'.
