The English and French Camps in the Piraeus - Sketched from the Gulf of Egina [Aegina], 1854. British and French soldiers camped in Greece, prior to fighting in the Crimean War. 'The two French Camps, occupied by the 23rd and 28th Regiments of the line, and a detachment of Infanterie de la Marine, are situated on the high ground on the right and left...They command the entrance of a small bay, at the extremity of which, on low ground, sloping down towards the sea, is the Camp of Her Majesty's 97th Regiment, which forms the British expeditionary force to Greece...the Camp is at the back of the present town of the Piraeus, about six miles from Athens...But though the Piraeus is more like a great basin than a port, from its great depth, it will accommodate a large number of heavy ships in security...'.
