Steam-ships reconnoitring at Sveaborg, in the Gulf of Finland, 1854. Crimean War: Royal Navy ships off Russian-held Sveaborg [modern Suomenlinna]. Marked are the 'Cathedral of Helsingfors', the islands of Stora Rantan and Langorn, and 'West Svarto'. '...Panoramic Sketch, taken on the 24th of May last, and, in addition to a general view of the Fortress of Sveaborg, and a portion of the town of Helsingfors, represents...the reconnoissance of the fortifications... H. M S. Dauntless, in company with the Basilisk, stood close in under steam to reconnoitre, and counted thirteen ships, three of which were steamers....the fortresses of Sveaborg...occupy no less than seven islands, several of which are united by bridges...the fortresses are said to mount 800 cannon, and to possess a garrison of 12,000 men'.
