The Whityngton Stone, 1854. Memorial to Richard Whittington in Islington, London, inscribed: 'Whityngton Stone. Sir R. Whityngton, thrice Lord Mayor of London. 1397, Richard II; 1406, Henry IV; 1420, Henry V; Sheriff, 1393'. A previous stone had been removed: '"I have to ask you, on the present occasion, to record the removal of the Whittington Stone on Highgate Hill. I discovered it as I strolled up the Hill a few days since. I was informed that it was removed about a fortnight since, and a public-house is now being built where it stood". It was then ascertained that the Stone had been taken to a mason's yard, for the purpose of reparation...the above Stone, is, at least, the third of the Stones which have successively stood upon the spot long since the days of Whittington'.
