Street in Balaclava, 1854. Crimean War. '...view of one of the streets of the Tartar town along which a party of Dragoons are passing, on their way to the English Camp; while a couple of dromedaries, and two or three natives in the Tartar costume, give an Oriental aspect to the scene...The street, skirting the harbour of Balaclava is as busy a scene as can he imagined. The murmur of half a dozen different languages - the boats landing with ammunition and stores - the hundreds of arabas drawn by camels and oxen wending their slow way to the trenches - the galloping to and fro of officers and orderlies, and too often, too, the slow tread of solders bearing to the hospital another sick or wounded comrade - form a striking spectacle'.
