Remains of Caldicott Castle, 1854. Excursion by the British Archaeological Association to Caldicot Castle in Wales. 'Mr. Freeman considered that the oldest part of the building was some remains of a fireplace in the inner hall, which were Early English. He could find nothing Norman in it...While viewing the castle, a storm came on, and the archaeologists were obliged to screen themselves in the towers and recesses. In one of these was a rustic of the neighbourhood, full of traditional lore, who assured the company that the tower in which they were had been built and inhabited by Julias Caesar, who was buried underneath the floor, and he stamped his foot to enable those present to hear the hollow sound of the coffin'.
