General William Tecumseh Sherman Monument, Washington, D.C., between 1913 and 1917. [Detail of the base of an equestrian statue of American Civil War Major General William Tecumseh Sherman. '"War", on the west side, is a horrible fury, seething with rage and hatred, who tramples humanity in the form of a dead young soldier at her feet. Large bronze vultures perch on the body about to feast on its flesh, graphically driving home Sherman's famous observation that "war is hell".'].
