Légende

Pictures from the late King of Holland's Collection - Christ Giving the Keys to S. Peter - painted by Rubens, 1850. 'Purchased for £1500 by Mr. Mawson for the Marquis of Hertford. In this superb picture, Christ is represented amongst his disciples; he wears a white robe, which falls off his shoulder and shows the breast. The Saviour is addressing St. Peter, who kisses the hand of his Master, who gives him the keys of heaven and hell; St. Paul, St. John and St. James being also present, and listening with surprise and attention. For grandeur of design, correctness of drawing, and harmonious colouring, this picture must be considered one of the most precious in the Gallery...The long-announced sale of the rich Gallery of the late King William II...has excited an unprecedented interest...the Hague has had a succession of visitors from almost every country'.
