Temporary Barrack at Ballater for the Queen's Guard of Honour, 1850. 'About eight miles distant from her Majesty [Queen Victoria]'s Castle of Balmoral is the delightful village of Ballater [in Scotland], where a temporary Barrack has been provided for the accommodation of the guard of honour in attendance upon the Queen, consisting of a detachment of the 93rd or Sutherland Highlanders, which is quartered in the village. The house and enclosure used as a Barrack is situated in the centre of the village: it forms one of the sides of a spacious grass square, in the middle of which stands the church. Ballater is most beautifully situated on the left bank of the river Dee, and lies embosomed in the hills; the blue summit of Loch-na-gar closing in the distant view. The appearance of the place, approached from the high-road from Aberdeen, gives one much the idea of a Swiss village'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
