Theseus and the Minotaur, 1850. Exhibit in the Sculpture Gallery at Holdernesse House, residence of Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, in Park Lane, London. 'The magnificent works of art this gallery contains are world-famous, the statuary including several chefs-d'oeuvre by Canova and other eminent sculptors'. The white marble sculpture of Theseus and the Minotaur, '...from the Fries Gallery at Florence', was acquired by Vane in the 1820s. It was made 1781-1782 by Antonio Canova, and later became part of the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
