The "Viceroy", at Anchor in the Roads at Galway Bay, [Ireland], 1850. Steamship carrying mail across the Atlantic. '...with the steamer O'Connell putting visitors on board; and Salt Hill, with the town and St. Vincent's church in the distance...The Viceroy was built for a Channel steamer, and as such has shown her sailing qualities to be excellent; but it is a far different matter to cross the Atlantic...The quantity of coals on board the Viceroy, amounting to 400 tons (her entire available tonnage, exclusive of engine-room and cabins, being only 432 tons measurement), sunk her very deep in the water. She draws no less than 13 feet 6 inches. This will, of course, materially interfere with her speed; and it is stated that she cannot arrive at her proper sailing trim before three days, at least'.
