Royal Academy Exhibition - No. 16 - "Samson Betrayed", painted by F. R. Pickersgill, A.R.A., 1850. 'Mr. Pickersgill...has found his subject in Scripture, and has sought to embody the betrayal of Samson by Delilah: "And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head - Judges, xvi. 19'. According to the Bible, the Nazirite Samson was given immense strength to aid him against his enemies. His lover Delilah betrays him by ordering a servant to cut his hair while he is sleeping. She then turns him over to his Philistine enemies. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
