New Reading-Room at the Bank of England, opened on Wednesday, 1850. '...a handsome reading-room, which has just been formed for the Bank of England Library and Literary Association [in London], instituted by the directors for the use of the clerks, was opened by Thomson Hankey, jun., Esq., Deputy-Governor of the Bank...the Chief Cashier, as President, and the Chief Accountant, the Treasurer of the institution, moved and seconded a vote of thanks to the Court of Directors for the handsome manner in which they had fitted up the Library...in short, the Bank of England Library and Literary Association, aided by the exertions of the committee, and their hon. secretary, Mr. J. R. Durrant, of the Three-and-a-Quarter per Cent Office, bids fair to become one of the most remarkable institutions in the metropolis'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
