Piazza del Popolo - Rome, 1850. 'On entering the city through the Porta del Popolo, by the ancient Flaminian Way, the open circular area in front is called the Piazza del Popolo; and with its fountains and Egyptian obelisk in the centre, the heights of the Pincian Hill crowned with public gardens on one side, and rows of trees on the other, and its southern sweep flanked by the domes and porticoes of the churches Santa Maria del Popolo, and Santa Maria del Miracolo - the whole terminating in three long and spacious streets, which carry the eye a long distance...'.
