Door of Upton Church, Buckinghamshire, 1850. 12th-century Norman door at St Laurence's Church, Upton-cum-Chalvey. 'Of late years, many appeals have been made to the public in aid of the restoration of certain of our ancient churches, which, from various causes, have fallen into decay. An effort is now making to extend this restorative hand to the fine old Norman church of Upton, near Eton...its architecture is so ancient and so beautiful, and the groined roof of its chancel so much to be admired, that it is hoped a sufficient sum may be raised to complete the necessary restoration...The Church (which is the parish church of Slough) is a very small but interesting edifice; and, with the exception of the porch and upper stage of the tower, is of Norman architecture. The exterior has no pretension to enrichment, save the elegant doorway forming the entrance to the nave...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
