Budleigh Salterton, Devon, 1850. 'This charming resort...has risen from a few straggling fishing huts into notice as a Watering-place within the present century...It is built along the bottom of a small valley, inclining from north-west to south-east, with buildings rising on each side, the eastern extremity opening towards the sea...The beach, which is composed solely of broad, flat, oval-shaped pebbles, extends from Otterton Point on the east, to the base of Orcombe Hill on the west, a distance at between two and three miles...The air is light, buoyant, and exhilarating. Rain is not so frequent here as at some other places on the coast. There are hot and cold baths, and bathing-machines on the beach...A broad footpath rises from the beach, on the western side, which will take the pedestrian over the cliffs, and to Exmouth.'
