Watering-Places of England - Herne Bay, and Pier, Kent, 1850. 'This is a Watering-place as yet in its infancy, and giving more signs of precocity and forcing than of steady and natural growth. Nothing can be more agreeable than its situation. It affords fine bathing and safe boating, and has a fine expanse of open sea in front; and in the rear, a beautiful and diversified country, abounding in scenery full of attractions, both to the pedestrian and equestrian wanderer. In addition to these advantages, it is considered to have a fine climate'. From 1833, a sail trolley vehicle, running on tracks and nicknamed Neptune's Car, ran the length of the pier from carrying passengers and baggage. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
