Sujet

Act 5 (Godanme), from the series "The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers (Chushingura)", c. 1834/39. During a heavy rainstorm in the mountains near Kyoto, an old peasant kneels and begs for mercy. Sadakuro, with a tattered umbrella, snatches the old man's purse and kills him with a sword.
