Légende

Poet Phillis Wheatley (c.1753-1784) was the first African-American author of a published book of poetry. Born in West Africa, she was sold into slavery as a child and transported to North America. The Wheatley family who bought her encouraged her poetry, and she was emancipated by them shortly after the publication of her book. This hardcover book is covered in a green, waved pattern. The front cover has two gold leaf design-detailed bands which are placed close to the top and bottom edge of the front cover. In the center of the front cover is an oval-shaped portrait of Phillis Wheatley seated at a desk with parchment in her left hand. The portrait is encircled by a gold leaf ribbon. Above and below the portrait are lines of gold script. The first line reads [The Poems of]. The second line reads [Phillis Wheatley].
