Page 53 from the January 23, 1869 edition of Harper's Weekly. The page contains 1/4 page illustration of the honorable John W. Menard in the upper let corner. African-American civil servant, poet, newspaper publisher and politician Menard (1838-1893) was the first black man ever elected to the United States House of Representatives. He is wearing a suit and sitting in a chair with both his arms resting on the armrests. The image in the bottom right corner is titled "Mrs. Brown, let me have a little warm water in a tea-cup, quick, if you please"' and shows a man sitting at a table and reading. A child is standing next to him. Also in the image is a woman holding a kettle and a teacup, standing next to a stove.
