The German Hospital and grounds, 1845. Garden front of the '...excellent Institution for the reception of the German sick poor...situated in the healthy suburb of Dalston [London], consisting of a large building, and several acres of gardens and pleasure grounds, which is an excellent provision for the use and recreation of convalescents'. The aims of the hospital were: '...first, to give relief in case of illness to as many as possible of their own poor and indigent countrymen, of whom there were no less than 20,000 to 25,000, industrious in their habits, and unexceptionable as to their general conduct, living in this metropolis; and, secondly, to offer a limited number of rooms with somewhat superior accommodations to such as were able to pay for their maintenance, and yet did not possess homes where they could obtain the comforts they required in periods of illness'. From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII.
