Ceremony of laying the "Foundation Stone" of the Durham Monument, on Penshaw Hill, 1844. The Penshaw Monument in Sunderland, County Durham, was built to commemorate John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, Governor-General of British North America. '...the Grand Master, the Earl of Zetland...came up in his radiant costume, with great dignity, preceded by his regal banner, and the Grand Sword Bearer, and followed by the Ionic light, the deputy Grand Master, the Rev. R. Green, Grand Chaplain, and Grand officers, with plumb, line... the ceremony was immediately commenced by the upper foundation stone being raised by the powerful mechanism fixed above it, and the Grand Master inspecting and adjusting the lower foundation stone in the usual manner'. The monument was built between 1844 and 1845 to a design by John and Benjamin Green.
