Mr Day's "The Ugly Buck", and Lord George Bentinck's "The Devil to Pay" - Race for 200 Guineas, at Newmarket, 1844. 'After one false start, which was occasioned by Algernon, the lot got off well together, but in a moment The Devil to Pay shot to the front, and obtained a lead of five or six lengths; The Ugly Buck was, however, soon at his quarters, and Wadastra colt well up with the latter on the near side, the rest following as well as they could... At this point it was quite evident that the race lay entirely with The Devil to Pay and The Ugly Buck, and so well did the former look that the only impression on the minds of the bystanders was that there would be The Devil to Pay amongst the Buckites at the finish. Down the hill they went with no perceptible change in their relative positions, but on reaching the Bottom The Ugly Buck was "persuaded" to get his head to the front, and after a good shaking he managed to beat The Devil to Pay by a neck !'.
