'Mrs. Siddons', c1796, (1942). Portrait of English actor Sarah Siddons (1755-1831). Siddons performed mainly Shakespearean roles including that of Lady Macbeth, and her farewell performance was in this role in 1812. She was considered by many to be the finest tragic actress of her time. After 'Sarah Siddons, ? as Mrs Haller in "The Stranger"', painting made c1796-1798. From "English Women", by Edith Sitwell.
